Over the next few decades after Dr. Murray's achievement more and more transplants of varying kinds took place. Livers, lungs, hearts, pancreases had all been transplanted successfully. Surgical techniques are still being refined and improved even today. Laparoscopic surgeries are a common, minimally invasive surgery. They use special small tools and cameras to do the operation inside the body and need only small incisions instead of large ones that leave nasty scars and long recovery periods.
Doctors hope that with new advancements in technology that soon donors will no longer be needed. 3D printed organs may soon be a reality. This would not only remove the need for donors, but also greatly shorten, maybe even eliminate, the massive waiting list for organs and save lives. It is estimated that about 22 people on the organ waiting list die everyday because the wait was too long (Kalil, Erickson, Barbero, & Brewster, 2016). If doctors could print organs then patients could potentially have the organ they need that very same day.
